Modems are now in mode. Almost one in four Australian households is now using one every week as use of the Internet is mushrooming.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported yesterday that the number of homes using a modem each week has trebled in two years. From 518,000 homes that let their PC link up with other computers in August 1996, there are now 1.58million homes doing so.

From being a relatively rare accessory two or three years ago, modems are now fitted to most household computers, becoming almost as standard as the printer and the CD-ROM.

The bureau's survey in August found that 40 per cent of Australian households now include a personal computer, up from 30 per cent two years earlier.
